Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS / Toyota 86: A Platform Built for Attacking Time
Time attack is a form of competition that has been around for years, but it seems as of late, the interest has begun to skyrocket here in the US. The sport of time attack provides the opportunity for entry level beginners to enjoy the limits of their everyday vehicle while also providing classes for some of the fastest and most capable cars that you’ll ever see. Across all classes, the common denominator is the same, complete a lap in the least amount of time possible. Over recent years, there has been the emergence of a few platforms that appear right at home on any time attack circuit. Whether it be their overall build potential or just the sheer fun to drive in OEM form, everyone has their reasons.
The Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS / Toyota 86 is a platform that you’re sure to see at any local track event as well as some of the most prestigious time attack gatherings around the world. Performance outfitters have taken a likening to this chassis due to its low center of gravity, incredible weight distribution, drivetrain orientation, depth of aftermarket optimizations and overall beautiful styling. The entry level price for the Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS / Toyota 86 allows for it to be attainable by many while leaving budget available for performance enhancements. With over 5 years of production models on the road, we wanted to take a look at our favorite time attack Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS / Toyota 86 builds from some of the top shops around the world.
The HKS TRB-03 Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS / Toyota 86 is probably one of the most impressive builds to date from one of the most respected tuning houses in Japan. Built with one sole purpose in mind, the HKS TRB-03 set out to beat the time attack record at Tsukuba by aiming for a sub 50 second lap. The HKS time attack Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS / Toyota 86 was fully rebuilt from the ground up featuring a full carbon body with some of the most spectacular and functional aerodynamics. HKS reworked the FA20 engine to the tune of 750+ horsepower and 650+ ft/lbs of torque for a truly blistering power to weight ratio. It’s more than likely a given, but HKS had their way with the suspension dynamics, upgrading all 4 corners with some of their most competitive HKS Hipermax coilovers. As what almost feels like an ode to the early 2000’s, HKS opted for a set of white Advan GT wheels to put all that power to the ground. The final result is a truly stunning time attack build that just edged out the Tsukuba lap record with a lap time of 0.49 and change, albeit controversially with the use of slicks.
One of our other time attack Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS / Toyota 86 favorites that has really caught our eye is the Dai Yoshihara x Eneos x Turn14 setup. This is a newer time attack build that competed at Gridlife this year and was Dai Yoshihara’s first real foray away from drift into the world of time attack. The fresh orange Eneos livery, subtle aerodynamics, and widebody stance has us loving the aesthetics of this time attack Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS / Toyota 86. To top it off, this time attack build features one of the most iconic engines of all time, a fully built single turbo 2JZGTE from the Toyota Supra. Similar to the HKS TRB-03 build, Dai also opted for white Advan GT wheels which seem to complement the body lines and livery exceptionally well. This car is a true beast through and through with a keen focus on function. We’re really hoping to see it make more appearances in 2019.
The last, and maybe the ‘oldest’ time attack Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS / Toyota 86 build that we can’t get enough of is the Evasive Motorsports execution. The Evasive time attack build has conquered many forms of competition ranging from Pikes Peak to Global Time Attack and always seems to do so with style and aggression. Evasive is an outfit that never compromises form and somehow always achieves the highest level of function which is a combination often overlooked in the US. The attention to detail in their time attack builds are uncompromising which is evident in their Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS / Toyota 86. Powered by an HKS supercharger with an output of roughly 225hp, Evasive relied heavily on producing a well balanced machine that could rely on aerodynamics and suspension to carry momentum through the turns. One of the most iconic features, the swan neck Voltex spoiler, applies plenty of downforce to the rear for higher speed cornering. Power is delivered to the pavement through a set of Volk TE37SL super lap matte black wheels, a true time attack favorite.
While we tend to focus our efforts on our Subaru STI time attack build, we must admit that we get the itch every so often to dive head first into a Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS / Toyota 86. The well balanced nature of the platform paired with the unlimited possibilities gets our mind running and our creative juices flowing. For now, we’ll suppress the urge and continue to admire the work of others who have successfully built some of the most menacing and capable time attack Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS / Toyota 86’s that we have come across.
